One thing we do while repairing our customer’s phone systems is to see if they’re compliant with current laws and regulations, including Kari’s Law.
Kari’s Law took effect on February 16, 2020. This federal law requires businesses with multi-line telephone systems to allow users to dial 9-1-1 directly without first needing to dial a prefix (such as 8 or 9) to reach an outside line. It also requires that a designated office staff person be notified anytime a 9-1-1 call has been placed.
Why do you need to comply with Kari’s Law? Most importantly, you may save a life if or when someone at your business has an emergency. Additionally, the FCC can levy fines of up to $10,000 for non-compliance, plus $500 per day for each day after the deadline.
What you Need to Know about Ray Baum's Act
RAY BAUM’s Act was signed into law in 2018 and named after an Oregon attorney. RAY BAUM is an acronym that stands for Repack Airwaves Yielding Better Access for Users of Modern Services. It focuses on the quality of location information provided to 911 operators so they can better assist first responders in locating those needing help. The act requires “dispatchable locations” include additional information such as building, room, or suite numbers or any other relevant information included on all multi-line telephones if technically feasible.
While some phone systems can be grandfathered in and not require compliance with these regulations, the exceptions are a bit unclear, and the FCC has left significant room for interpretation. While “substantial modifications” of grandfathered systems trigger the new regulations into being required, there is no clear definition of what is considered substantial.
