On Premise PBX Phone Systems
Serving Portland OR | Vancouver WA
“On Premise PBX phone systems” can be an overwhelming phrase, but America’s Phone Guys is here to help break it down for you. Because a business has different requirements for phone use, like conference calling, voicemail to email, and other internet-based features, your phone system needs to be a bit more complicated than a typical residential system.
How Does a Premise Based Phone System Work?
PBX means “Private Branch Exchange.” PBX systems have an in-house network (extensions for in-house dialing) and external connectors (outside lines to receive and make calls outside of the private network). Older PBX’s were entirely analog. Most PBX systems are labeled “On Premise”, because the exchange itself is housed within your office, similar to a private server.
Today’s PBX systems have an addition to them: IP, or “internet protocol”, because these premise based phone system operate over the internet (making it a type of VoIP, or voice-over-internet-protocol). Using IP capable phones, On Premise VoIP PBX phone systems connect over a Local Area Network (LAN). You will need something called SIP trunking to connect your private phone network to the outside world.

Is an On Premise PBX Business Phone System Right for Your Company?
On Premise PBX phone systems are perfectly suited for businesses that meet one or more of the criteria below:
- You have a mobile staff
- You have modern wiring at each site
- For a business to utilize an On-Premise business phone system, the wiring infrastructure in your location must be Cat 5e, Cat 6 or Fiber.
- You would like to keep at least one traditional phone line for faxing, alarm service, or as an emergency back-up line in case of a VoIP failure
- You want enhanced customization such as call queuing, ability to quickly change your find-me-follow-me settings, etc.
- You’ve tried Hosted VoIP and your Internet connection isn’t stable enough to support it
Benefits of On Premise VoIP PBX Phone Systems
Onsite VoIP PBX phone systems offer better and more consistent call quality than Hosted VoIP PBX systems. This is because the call traffic or signaling occurs on your network rather than involving switches that can be up to thousands of miles away.
Although VoIP PBX phone networks can cost more up front because of equipment, they’ll end up saving you money in the long run. It is substantially cheaper to make long-distance and international phone calls with a PBX VoIP.
